Making Things Happen

Making Things Happen (MTH2010) has become quite the popular trending topic on Twitter. It started as an idea by Lara Casey and has been hitting up cities all over the country. I stumbled upon it before I re-launched Bling Diva Designs, and was instantly inspired. I haven't been to any but I've been keeping an eye on some of the folks that have gone, and reading their blogs (and even watching their video blogs!) has definitely got me pumped up and determined to make things happen in 2010.

So, what have I done to do this? I filed a DBA for Bling Diva Designs, I figured out how I wanted to have my site and shop look like, and I decided to venture out into advertising info. Today, I applied for my business checking account. Wow! I always loved working on these cake toppers, but I really want things to happen for my little hobby. Slowly but surely, I'm getting there! With support of people online that I haven't met (but hope to one day) and also those around me here in my town. It just gets me so excited for all the possibilities!!

Mock-Up Monday v3

Happy Monday! Hope you had a wonderful weekend! The Bellisima Bridal show turned out to be much better than we anticipated! Met a lot of wonderful brides and later on this week I'll be announcing the winner for the Bling Diva Designs cake topper!

Now for this week's Mock-Up Monday!

This cake topper is simple, yet stunning. It utilizes the Abigail font for the RH and the Aubrey font for the ampersand symbol. Clear crystal is used for the letters, allowing the brilliant sapphire to stand out so beautifully.

For this couple, using the first name initials allows both of them to be represented on the cake, as perhaps the bride will be keeping her name and therefore the wedding monogram wouldn't have been a preferred choice. On many bridal forums, the discussion of changing your name is always a hot topic. If you're not sure if you will or won't, keep in mind this idea with using just first name initials for your cake!

Helping a friend

When I started searching for the dress for my wedding 2 years ago, I tried quite a bit of shops. There was one in particular that I had wanted to go to, but had heard that it had gone out of business. We had gone from 3 shops in our valley to 1. I went to the 1, and was sadly disappointed. A few weeks after that, I said in passing to someone how sad I was that the one shop over by IHOP had closed.

But I learned that they HADN'T closed! they moved and to a part of town I rarely frequent. So I went there, on a rainy day in January, on my lunch break, to see about finding a dress. I walked in, this nice tall blonde woman asked me what I had in mind, and pulled out this one dress that was not really what I had in mind. She told me to put it on first. So, I did. And I fell in love.

That was Holly. She works at Cruz's Bridal and picked out my dress. She also helped pick out Nicole's dress, and Cruz's has also outfitted 2 more bride friends of mine getting married in the next few months.

Since my wedding, I always try to find a reason to end up at the salon. There's just something about Adriana, Holly, and Lil Adriana that just make you feel like family. So, when they mentioned that they had wanted to try and get name tags for the bridal show this weekend, but hadn't really found the right ones, I offered to help.

We looked online at different types of dresses to design the name tag out of. Some were really cute, but when you used just the outline - it lost that special something. Then there were a few that we liked a piece of this, and a bit of that. So, I got to drawing. I got, for christmas, a wacom drawing tablet, and hadn't used it too much. But for this project, I knew I needed it.

I made tags for Adriana, Holly, Lil Adriana, and Cruz - the founder of Cruz's Bridal. I also made 3 that have just their name for any folks (like myself) that will help out at bridal shows. And, keep an eye out for a Mock-Up Monday near you featuring this design for a possible bridal shower cake topper!

And, don't forget - if you're in the Valencia, CA area on Sunday, February 21st, please come visit all the ladies and myself at the Hyatt Hotel for the Bellisima Bridal show!

Mock-Up Monday v2

Happy Belated Valentine's Day!! I hope you were able to share it with your husband/fiance/boyfriend/wife/girlfriend - you get the picture ;)

In honor of the holiday, I wanted to do a custom cake topper for this week's Mock-Up Monday. I love doing the regular letters for couples, but doing something custom really gets me excited. So, here's this week's cake topper - and the color crystal is Blue Zircon - often used for all of my turquoise toppers.

This is a cake topper designed after the famous Love sign by Robert Indiana. It's made its way all over different part of the globe. And, it's also currently available in the shop for purchase!

For this topper, I see it adorning a very simple, chic cake for perhaps a bride and groom getting married in a big city...Vegas? New York City, San Francisco, Chicago??? Or maybe in pink & gold tones for a romantic wedding in a barn lit by candlelight...

Shades of Purple - Christy

Christy got an early start on her cake topper for her wedding that is later on in May. She is having a larger cake, and ordered a 6" topper to adorn the top.

One thing I've noticed from looking through some wedding blogs, and some upcoming orders, and of course, purple is definitely a popular wedding color choice. While Pantone has declared 15-5519 Turquoise to be the wedding color of the year, I'm thinking it's going to be more like 520 C Grape. Hee hee.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. So Christy ordered a C to compliment her wedding cake that will feature purples and silvers. Instead of mixing these two colors, we went with 3 different shades of purple that range from a plum tone to a silver.

The purples we used were Amethyst, Light Amethyst, and Lavender. Isn't it beautiful?

Bellisima Bridal Show & a Giveaway

Last night I met with the wonderful women at Cruz's Bridal to pick up a bridesmaid dress for a wedding I'm in and also chat about the upcoming Bellisima Bridal show at the Hyatt in Valencia, CA.

Cruz's Bridal was created over 25 years ago by Cruz Aguirre, and her daughter, Adriana, now operates the business. It is definitely a family-owned and operated company as Adriana's daughter, also name Adriana and nicknamed Little A, works in the shop and models both wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses at local bridal shows. Adriana's twin sons also model the tuxes for the shows {and always put on a great show by the way!}

So on Sunday, February 21st, at the Hyatt Hotel in Valencia, I will be helping out Adriana, Little A, and Holly at their booth. I have also offered to donate a Bling Diva Designs custom cake topper for a lucky bride in attendance. The cake topper will be one of the 5" designs using any of the fonts on my shop's site.

Little A will be modeling different bridesmaid dresses that they carry in their store. They recently received a lot of new styles and some of them, I'll be honest, make me want to have a do-over from my wedding! They look more like cocktail dresses than the traditional bridesmaid dresses!

So please stop by and say hello if you're in the area! Be sure to provide your information to enter to win your own Bling Diva Designs cake topper too. You can pre-register on the website for the Bellisima Bridal show and pay half price for your ticket!

Mock-Up Monday v1

Welcome to Mock-Up Mondays! Each Monday, I'll do a mock up of different font and color combination, as well as sometimes venturing to something different - something that I haven't done before. And, as mentioned before, if you'd like to see a certain color combo in the future, or font mix, let me know! Either leave a comment below, or feel free to email me at melissa@blingdivadesigns.com. Thanks!

For this Mock-Up Monday, the traditional monogram is featured using the Aubrey font for the W and the Brooke font for the SL.

The W was created using the Hematite crystals. Hematite is a great alternative to black (Jet), but gives off more shimmer than the Jet crystals. The SL are covered in an alternating mix of Fuschia and Crystal.

Who would I see using this monogram? A couple that collaborated on their wedding mixing the classic use with black, and adding a pop of color with bright pink. The fonts, themselves, aren't too formal of a script, but still add some flair with the cursive style.

Wedding Style Dictionary

In one of my FAQs, I posted the question about what to do if you don't know what kind of cake topper to order.

Ordering a cake topper is supposed to be, as with a lot of wedding details, to reflect you as a couple. You can achieve that based on color choices, carrying over a monogram from your graphic designer, or taking something personal, and turning that into a cake topper.

But what if you can't find the exact words to express your wedding? Lauren with Every Last Detail created a list of words you can use to describe your wedding, and compiled all their definitions into one place! So, take a gander, and when ordering your cake topper, feel free to find the right words to use!

Something New

I wanted to come up with something new, a feature to show some ideas for future brides with options for custom designs. Perhaps its a mix of different colors, or making a fun monogram instead of the traditional letters, or something completely different.

But, I'd like some input. From the gallery of pics, you can see that I've done some toppers using a few of the same letters - but what would you like to see?

Leave a comment with either just 1 letter (perhaps your own? a friend's?) or 2 or 3 and I'll be working on some future posts that will be done for Mondays! Looking forward to hearing from you!
